Gregory the Illuminator

Gregory the Illuminator
(c. 240–332)
   Saint, Missionary and Bishop.
Gregory was a native of Armenia and may have been of royal descent. While in exile he became a Christian and, on his return to Armenia, he converted King Tiridates to the faith. Armenia then became the first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion. Gregory himself was consecrated Catholicos (Bishop) in Cappadocia and for several generations this became a hereditary position. Initially the Armenian Church was under the jurisdiction of Caesarea, but between 374 and 1375 it was wholly independent.
